In 2014, the series was outset announced by Netflix and Scholastic Media, and was titled The Magic School Bus 360°.[10] The new iteration of the franchise features a modernized "Ms. Frizzle" (replacing Valerie with her younger sister Fiona) and a loftier-tech bus that stresses modern inventions such as robotics, wearables and camera technology. The hope is to captivate children's imaginations and motivate their interest in the sciences.[11] It was produced by 9 Story Media Group.[12] Producer Stuart Stone, who voiced Ralphie in the original series, stated that The Magic Schoolhouse Bus 360° will feature some of the original vocalism actors in different roles. The testify's voice cast is based in Los Angeles, California, Us and Toronto, Ontario, Canada with Susan Blu as the Los Angeles phonation director and Alyson Court every bit the Toronto voice managing director.[13] In February 2017, Kate McKinnon was cast in the role of Ms. Frizzle (without clarifying it was Fiona, the younger sister of Valerie, now Professor Frizzle, nonetheless voiced by Tomlin). The series then changed its proper name to The Magic School Bus Rides Again.[fourteen] The series was released on Netflix on September 29, 2017.[one] The second season was released on Apr thirteen, 2018.[ii]

Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton sings the theme vocal.[15] Phoebe Terese, a grapheme from the original series, is replaced by a new student named Jyoti, every bit it was revealed that Phoebe transferred back to her onetime school.[16] [17] The episode endings characteristic question and answer sessions with Professor Frizzle, echoing the segments near viewers calling the producer which accompanied the original serial on commercial-costless channels.[eighteen] Despite clarifying some creative license taken in the episode, these scenes are still set in a universe with magical vehicles.[19] Among other changes, the students still wear the same clothes every solar day but they do non resemble those from the original serial.[twenty] 3 45–infinitesimal specials were released in 2020: the kickoff special The Magic School Bus Rides Again: Kids in Space was released on August 7,[21] the second named The Magic School Bus Rides Once again: The Frizz Connection on October twenty[22] and a tertiary titled The Magic School Jitney Rides Again: In the Zone on Dec 26.[23] The artstyle was inverse for the specials every bit the characters have no outlines and the lighting and shading are more than detailed.

Disquisitional reception [edit]

Why has this expert-natured show already received an inordinate amount of sentence? How can this much vitriol be thrown at a creation before anyone has even seen it?

Decider, [24]

Later on the series' announcement and the release of its trailer, there was initial resistance to the new art style, absence of Lily Tomlin equally Ms. Frizzle, and fright information technology would non live up to the original series.[25] [26] AOL accused the show of giving Ms. Frizzle a nose task.[27] Bustle put this down to fans of the testify beingness "protective of its legacy".[28]

Despite this speculation, the series has been critically acclaimed upon release. Common Sense Media deemed the show a worthy successor to its 1990s sister series, praising its gender and ethnic diversity and its commitment to teaching children about Stem subjects.[29] Christianity Today argues that the show managed to keep the "genius of the franchise", which is that the children are almost more intrigued by the complexity and order of the natural world rather than the magic of the titular school bus.[xxx] Daily Dot praised the series' premiere for addressing the change to the prove's structure, putting viewers at ease through the transition, calculation that the science was made "approachable".[26] The Houstonian found the episodes' scenarios to be "pretty interesting", commenting on the academical and moral lessons.[31] The AV Lodge felt the serial lives up to its predecessor, and contains the aforementioned "goofy humor and ease with making learning fun".[32] Some other AV Society article wrote that the series is "lively, fast-paced, and exceedingly tolerable for adults", and full of enough science to let them to park their kids in forepart of information technology guilt-free.[33]
